The Institute is an independent, , privately endowed university and organized into five Schools i.e. architecture and planning;management ; humanities, arts and social sciences;engineering). It has some 1,000 faculty members with more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and as much as 130,000 living alumni altogether.
MIT, with 5 schools and 1 college which contain a total of 32 departments, is often cited as among the top universities of the world. The Institute is usually known for the research and education in the field of physical sciences and engineering, and biology, economics, and management as well. The authorities sponsor 31 sports, most teams of which compete in the NCAA Division III's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.
As of 2015,19 Turing award winners , 52 National Medal of Science recipients,35 astronauts , 45 Rhodes Scholars, 38 MacArthur Fellows, 65 Marshall Scholars, 85 Nobel laureates, and 6 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with MIT. The school prevails a strong entrepreneurial culture, and the combined revenues of companies founded by MIT alumni comes to rank as the 11th largest economy in the world.
MIT is a large,best residential, research university with a majority in enrollments of graduate and professional programs.The university is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges from 1929. MIT operates on a 4–1–4 academic calendar where the fall semester begins after Labor Day and ends on mid-December, a four week Independent Activities Period in the month of January, and the spring semester begins by early February and ends in late May.
MIT students are refer d to both their classes and majors using acronyms . Departments and their corresponding majors are numbered in the exact order of their foundation for example;Course number one is Civil and Environmental Engineering is Course number one, while Linguistics and Philosophy comes at course 24. Students who major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science , the most popular department are collectively identify as "Course 6". Students of MIT use a combination of the department's course number and the number that are assigned to the class to identify their subjects.
MIT enrolled around 4,384 undergraduates and about 6,510 graduate students in one year from 2011–2012. Women constituted of 45% of undergraduate students. Undergraduate and graduate students were drawn from all 50 state and more than 115 foreign countries.
