THE STANFORD FACULTY



David Starr Jordan was appointed president in March 1891, and by June his first faculty - fifteen men of "youth and scholarly promise" - had accepted appointments. Jordan sought professors who combined the abilities for teaching and exploration, and he wrote, "Mr. Stanford wants me to get the best. He wants no ornamental or idle professors."

At this moment, Stanford has 2,153 members of the professoriate faculty. Faculty at Stanford are expected to be among the best est teachers and scientists in their fields. There are 562 faculty members appointed to endowed chairs.

Stanford university's present community of scholars includes twenty Nobel laureates, 4 Pulitzer Prize winners, 107 National Academy of Engineering members, 29 MacArthur Fellows, three National Humanities Medal recipients,18 National Medal of Science recipients, two National Medal of Technology recipients, five Wolf Foundation Prize winners, two Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, 
287 American Academy of Arts and Sciences members,163 National Academy of Sciences members,66 National Academy of Medicine members,29 National Academy of Education members, 48 American Philosophical Society members,1 National Medal of Arts winner, 6 Koret Foundation Prize winners and two Fields Medal winners


RESEARCH AT STANFORD


Stanford research is remarkable at both its breadth and depth. The research programs reflect the expertise, creativity and initiative of the faculty who determine, the research agenda. Stanford faculty have a long tradition of engaging with their colleagues and students within Stanford's 7 schools and operating across disciplines.

There are more than 5,500 externally sponsored projects all through the university, with the aggregate budget for sponsored projects at $1.22 billion during 2015-16, including the  National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC). Of these projects, the federal government sponsors approximately 81 percent, including SLAC. In addition, almost $260 million in support comes from non-federal funding sources.

STANFORD STUDENT HOUSING

Stanford is a residential teaching and research university. The Colonizing Grant of the university states the founders' wish: "It is desirable that the members of  both the faculty and students must generally reside upon the grounds of the University" Roble Hall, built back in 1918, is the oldest functioning residence which still houses students.

As of Autumn 2015, 6,509 undergraduates and 5,709 graduate students live within the university provided housing. Housing is made guaranteed for four years for entering freshmen. Approximately 97% of each and every undergraduates registered and residing at the home campus live within the on-campus housing.

FINANCES


In 2015-16, Stanford stood out as a $5.5 billion enterprise. This figure exhibits the university’s consolidated budget for operations, a compilation of all annual operation and restricted budgets which support teaching, scholarship and research, including the budgets of every schools and administrative areas with the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. It does not include the $774 million capital budget and the budgets for the Stanford Health Care and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
